Members of the All Ceylon Muslim Congress (ACMC), who represent the UPFA in the Eastern Provincial Council (EPC), have decided to withdraw from its alliance with the UPFA and function as an independent political entity, ACMC Deputy Leader, N.M. Shaheid, said yesterday.
Speaking to Ceylon Today, he said the ACMC's apex body, known as the People's Representative Committee, met on Monday night (24) to decide whether to cross over to the Opposition. However, a final decision will be taken on Saturday (29 November).
ACMC Members in the EPC will evaluate the two presidential candidates, Maithripala Sirisena and Mahinda Rajapaksa, after which a final decision will be taken.
ACMC People's Representative Committee comprising a total of 67 party members in Parliament, Provincial Councils, Local Government bodies and the Shoora Council will meet again on Saturday (29) in Habarana to decide where their new alignment would be. They will call for a vote at the meeting to decide which presidential candidate they would declare their allegiance to. Trade Minister Rishad Bathiudeen is the ACMC Leader.
